Oz the Great and Powerful - Theodora Riding Outfit

Costume design for Theodora's riding outfit. This is the artwork that convinced Sam Raimi to entrust me with the challenging task of designing most of the costumes for the film. My drawings and ideas served as a guide for Gary Jones, my co-designer who injected his magic to bring them to life with the help of the talented people in the costume department.

Loved how Zach Braff's performance brought the little monkey to life.

Oz the Great and Powerful - River Fairy

With today's premiere of Oz, I thought it might be cool to start sharing the designs. This was my first and only take on the River Fairy, it got approved by Sam right away. He's such an awesome director to work with. Enjoy the film everyone! :)

John Carter - Tal Hajus Concept Art

Tal Hajus concept for John Carter, directed by Andrew Stanton.
The collaborative effort of a couple of artists led to the final design of the Tharks, but the awesome drawings of Iain McCaig were the foundation.

John Carter - White Apes Key Frame

White Apes concept art for John Carter, directed by Andrew Stanton.
This image served as both character design and key frame for the film, and an earlier version has been used in the marketing campaign on billboards and posters as well. I've always wanted to design something like this for a movie, and I'm glad it happened on this one! Working with Andrew was an amazing experience.

Thor - Initial Frost Giant Concept

Early Frost Giant concept art for "Thor", directed by Kenneth Branagh. The image shows what kind of scale for the giants I originally had in mind. The Thor costume in this piece is based on the Esad Ribic version.

Thor -Bull Frost Giant Concept

Bull Frost Giant concept art for "Thor", directed by Kenneth Branagh.
Designed to give some serious headbutts!
Didn't have a long lifespan in the movie though - his face had an encounter with Thor's Hammer.

Thor - Frost Giants Concept

Frost Giants concept art for "Thor", directed by Kenneth Branagh. This one is to explore a range of body types. Since they come from a dying world, I wanted to incorporate these signs of destitution while still keeping a feel of innate strength.

Thor - Arrival in Jotunheim

Original concept art for "Thor", directed by Kenneth Branagh. This one is a key frame that shows the arrival of Thor, Sif and the Warriors Three in Jotunheim. My focus here was on the scale, lighting and overall atmosphere.

Thor - Odin Costume Design

Costume design for "Thor", directed by Kenneth Branagh. This one is a concept for Odin's casual dress, I'm happy how it got translated into the real costume for the film.

Thor - Destroyer's Vault

Original concept art for "Thor", directed by Kenneth Branagh.
This is one of the key frames I did, showing Thor and Odin while they discover what's left of the Frost Giants who attempted to steal the Casket of Ancient Winters.

Alice in Wonderland - Jabberwocky

Final design of the Jabberwocky for Tim Burton's "Alice in Wonderland".
I was imagining him a little less shiny than he ended up in the film.

Initial Caterpillar Concept

This is the actual drawing which got me the gig on "Alice".
At the time I did it, I wasn't even aware what movie and director it was for.
A couple of illustrators had been requested by Sony to participate in a pitch, and it turned out that Bobby Chiu, Kei Acedera and myself were hand picked by Tim Burton after Sony showed him the drawings.

About Me

My photo
Michael Kutsche is an award-winning German artist based in Los Angeles, California. He is a self taught artist who works both in traditional and digital media. His work is best described as an astoundingly lifelike depiction of parallel realities, populated by odd characters reminiscent of movies, comics but also Flemish Renaissance Painting. His unique approach of imaginative character creation has led him to become a character designer on Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland”, “John Carter of Mars”, directed by Andrew Stanton and "Thor", directed by Kenneth Branagh. Parallel to his career in the film industry he still keeps track of his own projects, including paintings for future exhibitions, book projects etc.
