Initial Caterpillar Concept

This is the actual drawing which got me the gig on "Alice".
At the time I did it, I wasn't even aware what movie and director it was for.
A couple of illustrators had been requested by Sony to participate in a pitch, and it turned out that Bobby Chiu, Kei Acedera and myself were hand picked by Tim Burton after Sony showed him the drawings.

awesome! (about being hand picked) I haven't seen the movie yet, but it's on my list of things to do. I like the depth in this drawing, how the background is out of focus. The tree stump he is sitting on looks real, do you ever collage or paint over real pictures in your drawings?

Amazing, I can't believe how detailed it is! If you don't mind me asking, what program did you use?
I watched the movie last Friday, and I really liked it, especially the design for the Cheshire cat, which, as far as I know, is your work ;P
I'm looking forward to see more pics (not necessarily Alice-related) from you.

Amazing work! I love the caterpillar and how detailed he is. And the colouring is incredible, too.

Very reminiscent of those ultra-detailed microscopic photographs you'd see of insects in science magazines.

Congratulations!

You are my favorite artist, your works are amazing. I am a "beginner", but I am really serious. I would really like to talk a bit with you (mail, msn or something else), and maybe learn some techniques and stuff.. ;p

Keep up the good work! I really love the smoking caterpillar, and just your style in general :D

hi!
Another congrats from me too!
I'm writing because I'm quite amused by this painting. When I see your (or basically anybodies) work I know how it was made. First of all I see the strokes of course. But if not, than I can imagine how it could be done... But not here! :D
Help a fellow artist and tell me how the hell did you made the "lower end" of the body. Tell me it's an overpainted photograph and I will be so happy. :)
Cheers from Prague!

Amazing design. It has a more sinister appearance than the final version, but his huge grin gives him a sense of whimsy.

About Me

My photo
Michael Kutsche is an award-winning German artist based in Los Angeles, California. He is a self taught artist who works both in traditional and digital media. His work is best described as an astoundingly lifelike depiction of parallel realities, populated by odd characters reminiscent of movies, comics but also Flemish Renaissance Painting. His unique approach of imaginative character creation has led him to become a character designer on Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland”, “John Carter of Mars”, directed by Andrew Stanton and "Thor", directed by Kenneth Branagh. Parallel to his career in the film industry he still keeps track of his own projects, including paintings for future exhibitions, book projects etc.
